A large-scale pay hike for soldiers in the army will begin next month, Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar said on Tuesday.
The Defence Ministry has been paying soldiers a salary of Rs 10,000 per month for the past seven years, and it will increase the amount to Rs 20,000 from next month.
Army personnel earn around Rs 12 lakh a month, which will be doubled to Rs 18,000 in a new plan announced last month.
The army has been facing pressure from various political parties, including the Congress, to boost the salaries of its soldiers.
It has been criticised for paying only half of the basic salary to its army personnel.
